Prototype 2.0 - The Humanoid
I know a girl, a magician. She can do anything, better than anyone else I know. The best thing is, she dosen't need food, relies on electric energy. This reminds me of someone. Ohh yes! Jaadu, from the bollywood film "Koi mil gaya"? Yes! She's just like jaadu with some differences. Major one is, she looks like one of us. Now i'll tell you who she is. A humanoid robot. A robot with a body shape to reflect the human body. Guys, maybe Jaadu was not an alien, possibly a robot who relies on solar energy! Why not!
Where did the word "Robot" came from? It came from a Czech word, Robota, meaning "forced labourers". It was used by Czech author Karel Capek in his 1924 production of "Rossum's Universal Robots". The robots were played by human actors. Film industry has already got their "Humanoids" Isn't It?
The first ever humanoid robot built by Ron Wensley in 1927. The robot did not have the ability to speak when it was first created, it later learnt to say two simple sentences.
Okay, you now know the robots, the humanoid robots. But, do you know when it all started? In recent years? NO! 400BC was the real starting point of robotics, when Mathematician Archytas created the first steam powered mechanical bird. In its best run, it flew approximately 200 meters before running out of steam. Not only was this the first robot ever created, it was also one of the first instances of scientific research into flying.
Now it's time to know the history of Humanoid Robots. It's like human evolution. Homo sapiens were the first modern humans. Maybe many years later, these robots will try to find their point of origin. Think in this way, God created us. We created Robots. So aren't we the god for Robots? Let's understand some of their God stories.
Around 1495, Leonardo da Vinci sketched a plan for the first recorded ‘humanoid robot’, known as Leonardo’s Robot. The robot could stand, sit, raise its visor and individually move its arms. The entire robot was operated by a number of pulleys and cables. Wow! Isn't it great? But wait. That was not the first Humanoid. Yes you heard it right.
"Herbert Televox". Created by Westinghouse Electric and Manufacturing Co in 1927, and was the first ‘Humanoid’ robot. And then its advanced version, "Elektro". was more widely accepted as the first advanced humanoid robot to be created.
ASIMO (Advanced Step in Innovative Mobility). After more than two decades of research Honda debuts ASIMO. It had 11 robotic predecessors that were developed in order to research bipedal walking robots. Upon its release ASIMO was the most advanced robot in the world, since then it has been continually developed and was the first robot capable of running, jumping and using the stairs. ASIMO is still seen as one of the most advanced robots in the world today.
Hanson Robotics released Sophia, a social robot with silicone skin, and the ability to interact with people and display more than 50 facial expressions. Sophia has been covered by media around the world and has participated in many high-profile interviews. The Sophia robot is also the first ever robot to be granted citizenship of a country.
Researchers are currently working on ways to get machines to understand intention and make intelligent decisions. It is a significant challenge for the scientists. We creep closer to creating robots that look and act like humans, there are plenty of questions to be answered. Questions here; Have we kept the world the way God wanted us to keep? A big NO! Then will the Humanoid robots keep it as we are expecting from them? Giving them all the special powers that we are having!! Will that lead to the end of our era?
Of Course everyone wants to be independent. If we give them the ability to think and act on it, will they want us to rule on them? The main motive behind creating them was to help human, reduce their work loads. Will this be achieved once they will start thinking on their own? Remember, they will have more power than us! The humans!
