World Mental Health Day 2020
World Mental Health Day
This year’s World Mental Health Day, on 10 October, comes at a time when our daily lives have changed considerably as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.
World Mental Health Day was started in 1992 at the initiative of the World Federation for Mental Health.
World Mental Health Day 2020 focuses on the need for investment in mental health. According to the World Federation for Mental Health (WFMH), the World Mental Health Day theme in 2020 is “Mental Health for All: Greater Investment – Greater Access.”
Five Warning Signs of Mental Illness
1. Long-lasting sadness or irritability.
2. Extremely high and low moods.
3. Excessive fear, worry, or anxiety.
4. Social withdrawal.
5. Dramatic changes in eating or sleeping habits.
In India, mental health is not even considered as a real aspect. Those who seek therapy are frowned upon, excluded from the society, termed 'crazy' and made fun of.
Sometimes, we don't even realise that our loved one needs taking care of. We assume they are acting out or seeking attention. Parents are insensitive towards their child's mental health.
Why?
Even after so many instances of suicides, why doesn't Indian society take mental health into consideration?
Even after opening up, why doesn't Indian society accept that their loved one needs help?
Even psychiatrists are termed crazy and mad in our country, what can a person needing help do?
It's high-time now. India has to break free from the chains of this social stigma that has killed our beautiful young minds.
This unfortunate pandemic has further taken a toll on mental health due to economic adversities, people stranded away from homes, daily wage workers and most importantly healthcare workers.
In these trying times we must seek help from wherever we can.
We are all in this together and together we can bring about mental health for all.
